Summary

Cornered by the Titan that devoured his mother five years earlier, Eren Yeager relives Carla's death while Mikasa Ackerman shields him despite her injuries. Hannes arrives and throws himself at the creature, eager for the chance to avenge Carla at last. Elsewhere the Armored Titan keeps hurling Titans at the soldiers, knocking Jean from his horse, while Ymir wavers over which side deserves her loyalty. Historia climbs onto her and pleads with Ymir to quit sacrificing everything for others and finally choose herself.

Hannes is bitten in half before Eren and Mikasa's eyes. Eren breaks down, laughing and crying at his own helplessness, but Mikasa quietly thanks him: for being with her, for showing her how to live, for the scarf. His hands healed, Eren rises and swears he will wrap that scarf around her as many times as it takes. When his bare fist connects with the Titan's hand, an unknown force awakens. Every Titan in the area converges on his mother's killer and tears it apart.

Reiner recognizes the Coordinate and moves to seize Eren, but Eren's shouted warning redirects the horde onto the Armored Titan, buying the soldiers their escape. To everyone's shock, Ymir breaks away from Historia and joins Reiner and Bertolt instead. That night the three rest atop Wall Maria in ruined Shiganshina. Ymir admits she came along as something they can hand over, since returning to their hometown empty-handed is not an option, and tells Bertolt she saved him because his breach of the Wall freed her from an endless nightmare. Reaching toward the moon, she decides being a goddess does not feel so bad.
