Shadow

Character

Shadow is a teleportation art tied to the Quincy, above all the Wandenreich. A caster's own shadow swells open into a gateway that links far apart dimensions, letting individuals or entire units step across in a single motion while their spiritual pressure vanishes from wherever they departed.

Appearance

The technique works by stretching an existing shadow into a doorway. Hand gestures set how wide it opens, and the larger versions grow big enough to pour whole ranks of Soldat through, at which scale the portal tends to settle into the shape of a Quincy cross.

Abilities

Once opened, the gate bridges distant places across the dimensions, from the Wandenreich's own Schatten Bereich to the Soul King Palace and even a person's inner world, and the traveler's Reiatsu drops away from the point of departure the moment they cross. The catch is that it always needs a shadow to work from, so it cannot be cast in a space with no shadows at all. Those inside the passage keep the use of their powers while in transit, as when Nianzol Weizol shielded Yhwach with his Schrift from within.

History

Recorded users span much of the Wandenreich, including Asguiaro Ebern, Luders Friegen, Robert Accutrone, Jugram Haschwalth, and Yhwach, along with the being Zangetsu, and the anime adds figures such as Bambietta Basterbine, Bazz-B, and Uryu Ishida. Ebern claimed the passages could only be used by the chosen, and a note from Tite Kubo goes further, saying Shadow is not a true Quincy skill at all but a power unique to Yhwach that he bestows on others.
