Personality

Blunt and boyish, Shino has a forceful streak and tends to broadcast whatever crosses her mind at full volume. She works to toughen up the timid Ryūnosuke, forever scolding him for being too soft. One subject sets her off instantly: any jab about her flat chest earns the offender a punch.

History

As the two are about to begin their duty over Karakura Town, Shino finds a drowsy Ryūnosuke facing the wrong way and wakes him with a slap. When he admits he is frightened, she insists there is nothing to fear at her side and barks at him to stand tall; his crack that she has no chest to speak of promptly earns him a fist to the face. They cross into the Human World with Kurumadani, who sees them off with a few words of encouragement before they split up, Shino heading north. On patrol she is set upon by a pack of Hollows, and Ryūnosuke later finds her caught in their grip.

Ichigo Kurosaki rescues the pair; Shino bounces back at once, but Ryūnosuke stays unconscious for two days, and the moment her relief fades once he wakes she punishes him for the delay. After Ichigo boots the intruder Asguiaro Ebern out a window, the two are left puzzling over who he was, and soon Ryūnosuke's Denreishinki rings out with a recording of Shino's own singing voice. Back in Soul Society, the division's Sixth Seat Hidetomo Kajōmaru walks them through the divide between Shinigami and Quincy amid the growing war, only to be struck down before them by Jugram Haschwalth. Days later Shino joins the Shinigami who lend their Reiatsu at the Research and Development Institute to build the gateway into the Soul King Palace.

Her surname stayed unspoken for years. The light novel Can't Fear Your Own World names her as Ikkaku Madarame's younger sister and gives her an unnamed Shikai that takes a naginata form echoing her brother's blade, a detail later carried into the anime.
