Clash! The Person Who Protects vs. The Person Who Suffers

Facing the Arrancar in Karakura Town, Hitsugaya, Renji, and Rangiku invoke Gentei Kaijo, releasing the seals that cap their power in the Human World and restoring roughly five times their strength. The reversal is immediate and brutal: Renji's Hihiō Zabimaru tears through Yylfordt Granz, Rangiku cuts down Nakeem Grindina, and Hitsugaya impales Shawlong Koufang with a cross of ice before collapsing from his own wounds. Renji, shaken, realizes the group is in grave danger if every Arrancar is this strong.

Ichigo's battle goes the other way. Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez toys with him, catching Tensa Zangetsu bare-handed and battering him through the streets with punches and kicks. A lighter interlude follows Keigo bringing the wounded Ikkaku and an unharmed Yumichika home, where his sister Mizuho cheerfully takes them in. Back in the fight, Ichigo finally lands a black Getsuga Tenshō that scorches Grimmjow, only to feel his inner Hollow stirring to seize control.

Before either can finish, Kaname Tōsen arrives through a Garganta and orders Grimmjow to stand down, since the Arrancar invaded and mobilized his forces without Aizen's permission. Grimmjow warns Ichigo to remember his name and departs for Hueco Mundo. Though Renji assumes Ichigo won because the enemy retreated, Ichigo flatly calls it a loss, unable to shake that he protected no one and beat no one.

The Gentei Kaijo release lets Hitsugaya, Renji, and Rangiku annihilate Shawlong, Yylfordt, and Nakeem, though Hitsugaya is left gravely injured. Ichigo unveils the black Getsuga Tenshō against Grimmjow, a technique tied to his inner Hollow that he can only use a few times safely. Tōsen intervenes to drag Grimmjow back to Hueco Mundo for punishment, ending the duel prematurely. Ichigo declares himself the loser despite the Arrancar's withdrawal, setting up his drive to grow stronger.

The episode adapts chapters 210 through 213 of the Arrancar arc. The anime softens much of the manga's violence, leaving Shawlong's hand intact, sparing Yylfordt his severed arm, and reducing the depth of several wounds. It also reorders Keigo's rescue of Ikkaku and Yumichika to occur during Ichigo's fight rather than after Grimmjow's retreat. A Kon-sama Illustrated Guide segment shows Kon accidentally triggering Hanatarō's Shikai, Akeiro Hisagomaru.
