Rangiku Matsumoto

Wavy blonde hair falls past Rangiku's shoulders, framing her blue eyes and full lips, with a small beauty spot marking the right corner of her mouth. Her figure is famously voluptuous, and she wears her black Shinigami robes deliberately loose across the chest. A slim gold chain rests at her collar and a long pink scarf drapes over her shoulders, while her lieutenant's insignia is fastened to her sash rather than worn on the arm. She keeps her sword slung behind her back. In the living world she dresses either sharply or provocatively, unbuttoning a school uniform much as she opens her robes in Soul Society. Her look shifts over the years: cropped and curling toward the chin after Sosuke Aizen's fall, with a slit running down the right leg of her uniform, then grown long once more in the decade following Yhwach's defeat.

Laid-back to a fault, Rangiku dodges paperwork whenever she can and rarely turns down a drink, often talking strangers into covering the tab. She is entirely unabashed about her body, joking about it in casual conversation and happily leaning on her charm to get her way, as when she tries and fails to talk Ichigo Kurosaki into letting her lodge at his home. Her carefree streak plays against the stern Hitsugaya, yet the two are genuinely close. She first met him as a boy at the market, scolded him, and pushed him toward the Shinigami academy so he could master the power leaking out of him and spare his ailing grandmother. Beneath the frivolity she reads people well, noticing Hitsugaya's worry for Momo Hinamori, Izuru Kira's shame over Gin Ichimaru's treachery, and Orihime Inoue's low spirits, and she turns coldly serious in a fight. Her sharpest showing comes against Tier Harribel's underlings, whom she goads into bickering long enough to strike. Dried persimmon is her favorite treat, the same snack once loved by Gin, the childhood friend who first told her that the day they met would be her birthday. These days she keeps company over drinks with Shunsui Kyoraku and Shuhei Hisagi.

As a lieutenant, Rangiku carries a high reserve of spiritual energy and a rounded combat skill set. Her swordplay leans almost entirely on her blade's special power, letting her engage whole groups at once, and she is no slouch unarmed either, dropping handsy strangers with well-aimed kicks and blows. She moves quickly enough to shadow her captain, recognizes Kido on sight, and can invoke the high-numbered binding spell Tenteikura without a chant. She is also physically formidable, once halting a huge Arrancar's stomp with one hand and surviving the loss of her entire right flank to Ayon's attack. Cunning rounds out the picture: she feigns unconsciousness to trick Nakeem Grindina and needles Harribel's Fraccion into fighting one another. Her Zanpakuto, Haineko, or Ash Cat, is a plain katana with a feline-shaped guard until released by the command Growl. In Shikai the blade dissolves into a cloud of ash, every mote a cutting edge that she steers with a small twitch of the hilt to slice anything the dust settles on, much like Byakuya Kuchiki's Senbonzakura, and she can just as easily mass it into a shield. Focused forms include Neko Rinbu, which whirls the ash into a killing tornado, and House, a layered ash wall she raises to support Hitsugaya's ice techniques. She has yet to attain Bankai, hampered by a spirit as lazy and self-centered as she is.
