As the group prepares to depart for Soul Society, Kon insists on coming along to rescue Nozomi, and Urahara asks the others for a favor. In Inaba's laboratory, a Reigai of Nanao detects several Reiatsu in the Dangai and dispatches forces to the Senkaimon. The gathered Reigai meet Renji, Rukia, Uryū, Sado, and Orihime, who act as a diversion so that the powerless Ichigo and a cloaked Urahara can enter through the natural Senkaimon Nozomi once exposed. Realizing the trap, the Reigai fall back, and the intruders quit the ruse once word confirms the real infiltration succeeded.

Inside the empty S.R.D.I., Urahara explains that Inaba disguised his Reigai equipment as legitimate research and sets about restoring Ichigo through a Modified Soul built from Reishi data. He warns that the strain will be severe and that only Ichigo's spiritual energy, not his Hollow powers, can be returned. A flashback traces Yushima's transfer, the abandoned Operation Spearhead, and his slide into a catatonic state after hiding his research in the Dangai.

An explosion scatters them, but Ichigo emerges with his powers back and the Mod-Soul in hand. Because the soul was incomplete, one of his eyes blackens and Urahara cautions that his Hollow could seize control. After fending off arriving Soul Reapers, the trio hunts for Inaba's true lab and Nozomi, only to be cornered by the Reigai captains until Yoruichi and the loyal captains appear to meet them.

Renji's group serves as bait so Ichigo and Urahara can sneak into the Seireitei. Urahara restores Ichigo's Reiryoku with an unfinished Modified Soul, leaving his Hollow powers unstable. Inaba proceeds with the risky fusion between himself and Nozomi despite his failing condition. The confrontation with the Reigai captains sets up the arrival of Yoruichi and the Gotei 13.

An anime-original episode within the Gotei 13 Invading Army storyline. A comic Illustrated Picture Book segment has Urahara repeatedly botch repairs on Kon's damaged body, culminating in attaching Kon's head to a live lion, which earns him a kick. The episode first aired in Japan on August 23, 2011, using the opening BLUE and the ending Haruka Kanata.
