Summary

Battered by Kariya's Doll, Messer, Ichigo Kurosaki survives by wrapping himself in protective Reiatsu, then adapts to Kariya's counterpunching style with rapid, opening-free assaults. Kariya answers by revealing Messer's true form, generating lightning that pins and slashes Ichigo. Explaining that he means to trigger every hidden Jokaisho and erase the Seireitei, Kariya condemns both the Bount and the Shinigami who created and exploited them, resolving to drag all of them into ruin.

Renji stops Rukia from interfering, telling her to trust Ichigo. When Ichigo's strength fails, his inner Hollow seizes control and fires a point-blank black Getsuga Tensho that badly wounds Kariya, who then finds he can no longer absorb Reishi because of Ran'Tao's earlier dagger. Across the Seireitei, Ukitake, Shunsui, Hitsugaya, and other officers race to seal the scattered Jokaisho under Yamamoto's command, while Byakuya intercepts Kariya's lightning and Yoruichi arrives to back Ichigo.

Kariya sustains himself on the Jokaisho's power as the two clash across the ruined hill, and Ichigo, redirecting a final storm of lightning, presses forward on sheer will to protect his friends. Their last exchange erupts in a pillar of light. Kariya, defeated, crumbles into ash on the wind, and Ichigo concludes that the Bount leader let himself lose, wishing only to end his endless life.

Notes

This anime-only episode has no manga basis and closes the Bount Assault on Soul Society arc, airing one hundred eighth with the opening Rolling Star and the ending Baby It's You. A Shinigami Illustrated Picture Book segment finds Ganju and Taichi hiding from a furious Kukaku in the same spot. As in the previous episode, the staff flagged that Ichigo's Bankai Reiatsu is drawn light blue rather than black with a red outline.
