Reishukaku

Crafted and kept by the Shiba Clan, this device is a mid-sized orb of clear material marked with a red crane emblem. It also goes by a much longer designation, the special Reishi hardening partitioning generation device. Its purpose is defensive: it wraps its holder in a shield of spirit energy that can turn aside outside force.

When Reiryoku flows into the orb it throws up a semi-transparent blue shell, nicknamed a cannonball, around whoever is gripping it. If several people feed their energy in at once, the resulting barrier can grow tough enough to survive the Shakonmaku, a field that ordinarily dissolves any spiritual body it meets. The exact form and firmness of the shell shift from one user to the next, and it can also serve in a fight, break a fall, or hold someone aloft. The device carries real hazards, however. It drinks Reiryoku constantly, so even a brief use leaves people worn out, and a lapse in focus can burst the barrier outright. An outside force such as the Shakonmaku can melt the shell into a swirling vortex that then explodes, flinging those inside apart across great distances, while a weapon driven through it traps the attacker and catches them in the blast. Too much raw power with too little control breeds a huge, dense shell that wrecks its surroundings, and anyone joining a shared barrier must match their output to the others through their touch on the orb to keep it from destabilizing.

The Shiba Clan owns and operates the device. During the Ryoka Invasion, Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends used it to force their way into the Seireitei, with Kūkaku Shiba firing them from her Kakaku Taihō while they held a joint barrier and her brother Ganju Shiba helped steer the cannonball into the Shakonmaku. The impact melted the already-shaky shell and scattered the group in every direction; what became of the orb afterward is not known.
