Kūkaku Shiba

Youthful in the face and of middling height, Kūkaku winds a bandage around her wild black hair, which tumbles down and splits in two near the base of her back. Green eyes sit above a daring red robe worn open across the chest over a white skirt, and a tattoo marks her left arm. Her right arm ends below the shoulder, which she keeps wrapped, as she does both ankles, and she completes the look with wooden sandals and a draped cloak.

Short-fused and rough around the edges, Kūkaku thinks nothing of thrashing whoever irritates her, and she is rarely without her pipe. She has a habit of picking up her house and redesigning it on a whim, yet the flamboyant style stays consistent enough to be recognized at a glance, and she prefers quieter ground far from crowded districts. Underneath the aggression she holds her dead brother's memory in genuine esteem.

Raised and schooled by the retainers Koganehiko and Shiroganehiko, who stayed on even after the Shiba name lost its noble standing, Kūkaku took charge of the family and eventually shifted her home away from the Seireitei's West Gate. When the Ryoka needed a way past the city's defenses, Yoruichi brought them to her door, and Kūkaku agreed to help on the strength of her ties to Kisuke Urahara, lending them her younger brother Ganju as an escort. As the Rukongai's foremost pyrotechnician, she rigged her Kakaku Taihō cannon and a sphere of spirit energy called the Reishukaku to launch the group through the barrier ringing the Seireitei, browbeating and pummeling Ichigo and Ganju into line along the way.

Her talents run past fireworks. A capable hand-to-hand brawler and a gifted Kidō user, she later joined Jidanbō at Sōkyoku Hill and put down the gatekeeper Higonyūdō with a high-level destructive spell. She also made peace with Rukia, whom she had blamed for Kaien's death, offering forgiveness in exchange for a single word of apology once Ukitake told her the whole story. Far later, during the Wandenreich conflict, she fired the Tenchūren toward the Soul King's palace so Ichigo could reach it, and revealed she had pulled Ginjō, Tsukishima, and Giriko out of the Rukongai districts to train at her hall. The Shiba bloodline ties her closely to others, since she is niece to Isshin Kurosaki and therefore cousin to Ichigo, Yuzu, and Karin.
