Gripping the bars of Rukia's cell, Renji cannot accept Byakuya's news that she is condemned to die in twenty-five days by order of Central 46. Byakuya coldly states their next meeting will be at the execution ground and departs. Rukia hides her dread behind bravado, teasing Renji about escaping and mocking his tattoos until he storms off insisting he does not care, though privately he doubts Byakuya will allow it.

Elsewhere, Kenpachi and Gin corner Byakuya, needling him over his calm. Kenpachi even offers to behead Rukia himself as a favor, prompting Byakuya to dismiss his competence. Before the two captains can escalate, Gin binds Kenpachi in cloth and whisks them both onto a rooftop with a flash step, apologizing for stirring things up.

Under the shop, a battered Tessai climbs from the pit with cracked glasses, and Jinta urges him not to miss the fight. Seeing Urahara cleave a boulder, a shaken Ichigo underestimates the small blade, certain a sword drawn from a cane cannot be a zanpakuto and therefore cannot harm him. Urahara instantly disproves this by shaving off the last of the Hollow mask and grazing him, then chides his naivety and releases his Shikai, Benihime, confirming it is very much a zanpakuto.

Byakuya informs Renji and Rukia that her execution is set for twenty-five days out. Gin defuses a brewing clash by binding Kenpachi and removing them both. Ichigo wrongly assumes Urahara's cane sword is harmless, and Urahara reveals his Shikai, Benihime, mid-fight.

Events here span Episode 19, Ichigo Becomes a Hollow, and Episode 20, Gin Ichimaru's Shadow. The twenty-five-day countdown set here becomes the ticking clock driving the entire Soul Society rescue. The chapter cuts between the captains' maneuvering and Ichigo's final training, tying both threads to Rukia's fate.
