Urahara whittles Ichigo's oversized sword down to a bare hilt, exposing how little true power it holds. Cornered and calling himself a coward, Ichigo finally hears the voice of his blade and shouts its name for the first time: Zangetsu.
Facing Benihime, Ichigo recalls Renji mocking him for wielding a nameless zanpakuto, and Urahara confirms that every such blade carries a name. Urahara then hurls Ichigo into a boulder and, when the boy blocks the follow-up with his broken sword, praises the nerve before shearing the remaining blade in half. Ichigo's weapon, he explains, is bloated and empty of spiritual power, a puffed-up husk shaped like a sword, which is why it keeps crumbling. Another strike leaves Ichigo clutching little more than a hilt.
Warning that the exercise is no longer about courage, Urahara promises to kill him if he charges with that toy and unleashes his spiritual pressure. Terrified, Ichigo flees, is seized and thrown, and rolls clear of a downward slash while cursing himself as a gutless coward with no resolve.
At that moment Zangetsu appears and pulls Ichigo's mind back into the inner world. The blade's voice, he says, is being drowned out by fear alone, and a single foe is nothing to dread. Retreat only ages a man, he warns, and fear will be the end of him. He orders Ichigo to call out, and Ichigo shouts the name Zangetsu, sending spiritual pressure roaring from the hilt.
Urahara reveals that Ichigo's zanpakuto lacks real spiritual power and reduces it to a hilt, then warns he will kill Ichigo if he attacks with the broken weapon. Zangetsu draws Ichigo inward and tells him to cast off his fear, and Ichigo speaks his zanpakuto's name for the first time.

Urahara explains that Ichigo's oversized blade is bloated and empty of spiritual power, a puffed-up husk shaped like a sword, which is why it keeps crumbling. He shears it down until Ichigo is left clutching little more than a hilt.
In "THE BLADE AND ME," Zangetsu draws Ichigo's mind into his inner world and tells him his blade's voice is being drowned out by fear. Ichigo casts off that fear and shouts the name Zangetsu for the first time, sending spiritual pressure roaring from the hilt.
The chapter shares its title with the eighth volume, THE BLADE AND ME, and centers on Ichigo finally hearing and naming the spirit of his own blade. It marks the moment his connection to Zangetsu is made.
Warning that the exercise is no longer about courage, Urahara promises to kill Ichigo if he charges in with the broken toy of a sword, then unleashes his spiritual pressure. A terrified Ichigo flees before Zangetsu intervenes.
"THE BLADE AND ME" is adapted in Episode 20, Gin Ichimaru's Shadow. Renji appears only in a flashback recalling his earlier lesson about naming a zanpakuto.
