A Star and a Stray Dog

Cut down and unable to lift his arms or legs, Renji accepts his defeat while staring across at a bleeding Ichigo. Anguished, he cries out with Rukia on his mind, and the chapter sinks into the distant past.

In Inuzuri, the poorest and most dangerous stretch of the southern Rukongai, a young Renji flees an old man enraged over stolen water alongside his friends. Rukia trips the pursuer, stomps him, and leads the children away, becoming, as Renji recalls, the center of their world from that day on. He describes her as bossy and rough-spoken yet naturally graceful, and notes that only he and Rukia carried strong spiritual power among their group. Bound together by their shared hatred of the slum, where every adult was a criminal and every child a stray dog, they saw only one escape.

Ten years later, Rukia proposes they become Shinigami and live inside the Seireitei, standing beside Renji at the graves of the friends they had already lost. Accepted into the Shin'o Academy, the two rise despite the arrogant nobles around them. One day Renji rushes to share his exam success and finds Rukia with Byakuya Kuchiki and Nobutsune Seike; recognizing Byakuya's kenseikan and crushed by his reiatsu, Renji realizes he is a nobleman. Rukia reveals she is being adopted into the Kuchiki Clan and will graduate early into the Gotei 13. Hiding his feelings, Renji brushes it off as good fortune and jokes about envying her, and Rukia quietly pushes away his hand and thanks him before leaving.

In the present, Renji staggers to Ichigo and grabs his collar, confessing that years of daily training never made him strong enough to beat Byakuya or to save Rukia. Cursing his own cowardice and calling himself a stray dog, he begs Ichigo to rescue her in his place, and Ichigo solemnly promises that he will.

The chapter establishes Renji and Rukia's shared childhood in Inuzuri, introduces Byakuya in flashback, and shows Rukia's adoption into the Kuchiki Clan. Defeated, Renji entrusts Rukia's rescue to Ichigo, who accepts the promise.

The Japanese title translates to A Star and a Stray Dog, romanized as Hoshi to Norainu. The chapter closes the eleventh volume and was adapted into Episodes 31 and 32, the latter titled The Star and the Stray Dog. Renji's childhood companions Fujimaru, Kosaburo, and Mameji appear in the flashback.
