Summary

At the scaffold, Sui-Feng and Omaeda remark on the sparse attendance, with only the heads of the Second, Fourth, and Eighth Divisions present. Byakuya's arrival surprises her, and when a shaken Rukia calls out to him, he turns his face aside and joins the other captains. Yamamoto asks the prisoner for any final words, and Rukia answers that she has a single thing to say.

Away from the hill, Hisagi spots that Tosen has activated his Bankai and moves to check on him, only for a battered Yumichika to stop him, propped up on his released blade. Their exchange about how the Ninth and Eleventh Divisions view defeat leads Yumichika to a confession: he keeps the Fifth Seat solely because he dislikes the shape of the character for four. He finds three the most beautiful figure, but since Ikkaku holds Third Seat he settled on five, which he thinks looks closest to three. He then reveals that his division shuns spell-based swords, and demonstrates his hidden power as peacock-feathered vines burst from his hilt in place of its curved blades. He begs Hisagi to keep the secret from Ikkaku and Kenpachi, leaving the lieutenant rattled.

Trapped inside Enma Korogi, a winded Tosen cannot grasp how Kenpachi keeps slipping his strikes without any of his senses. Kenpachi, relying on touch, realizes he must actually pinpoint Tosen to land a blow. Imagined advice from Yachiru, Ikkaku, and Yumichika runs through his head, and Yumichika's suggestion to give up beautifully sparks the answer. When Tosen thrusts his sword clean through Kenpachi's torso, assuming his enemy's love of battle left an opening, Kenpachi seizes the man's hand and hilt, snaps back to his senses, and carves open Tosen's chest.
