THE Speed Phantom 2 (Denial by Pride, Contradiction by Power)

Byakuya Kuchiki dwells on the instant his eyes lost Ichigo Kurosaki after both combatants released their Bankai, an instant that ended with a sword tip resting at his own throat before he could respond. Deciding the youth pulled back out of conceit, he lectures that pride undoes the ground beneath a victor and dismisses the modest black blade of Tensa Zangetsu as far too small to be a genuine Bankai, especially in the hands of a mere Ryoka. Cautioning that no fighter is granted more than a single miracle, he unleashes Senbonzakura Kageyoshi once more.

Ichigo slips past the oncoming petals at the last moment, weaves through a second stream, and lands a strike the captain barely parries. Vanishing behind Byakuya, springing off one hand to duck beneath another wave, and scattering afterimages in his wake, he outpaces the swarm entirely. Byakuya responds by steering the blades with his hand to double their velocity and funnels the whole mass onto Ichigo in midair, certain of the kill. Instead, Ichigo carves through every petal with a flurry of rapid cuts, reminds the captain of his own words about a lone miracle, and materializes at his back to thrust. Byakuya catches the blade near its guard with his bare right hand as blood sprays, grasping at last that Tensa Zangetsu crams all of its might into that small edge to let Ichigo strike at overwhelming force and blinding speed, a secret he swears to crush along with its wielder.

The installment turns the duel into a contest of pure speed and reveals the trade-off at the heart of Ichigo's Bankai. Part of the Soul Society arc and gathered in the nineteenth volume, it was adapted into the fifty-eighth episode of the anime.
