Goaded into taking Ichigo seriously, Byakuya lets his sword sink into the ground and calls forth his bankai, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, a rising forest of blades that dissolves into countless drifting petals. Ichigo counters with his shikai Zangetsu, firing repeated blasts of Getsuga Tenshō, but the petals reconverge from every angle until the full weight of the technique buries him in a crater. Byakuya explains that the assault strikes simultaneously from all directions, then dismisses slow attacks as useless against it.

Refusing to concede, Ichigo insists he has already reached bankai and pours his spiritual pressure into a towering column of energy. Elsewhere in the Seireitei, Hitsugaya seals a barrier over the wounded Hinamori and hurries with Rangiku toward the Central 46, aiming to report the truth about Aizen, while Hinamori wakes, discovers Aizen's letter, and resolves to seek answers of her own. Ichigo's other companions spot the surge of power, trade a comic argument over an idiom, and bid a startled Aramaki farewell before he stubbornly follows them up the execution stairs.

When the dust settles, Ichigo stands in a ragged black coat wielding Tensa Zangetsu. Disbelieving, Byakuya prepares to attack, only to find the blade's tip already at his throat. Ichigo lowers it and leaps back, then evades the returning petal storm at blinding speed, scattering the entire technique with a flurry of slashes before nearly running Byakuya through. Byakuya catches the blade near its hilt, deduces that the small sword concentrates every ounce of Ichigo's power for hyper-speed combat, and vows to crush that strength along with its owner.

Byakuya activates his bankai for the first time in this fight, overwhelming Ichigo's shikai. Ichigo declares he has attained bankai and, after recalling his earlier defeat and Rukia's departure, releases Tensa Zangetsu. Holding the tip to Byakuya's neck, he chooses to spare him rather than kill. Hitsugaya erects a protective barrier over Hinamori and sets out with Rangiku to appeal to the Central 46, discovering the compound guarded only by its emergency defense lock. Hinamori awakens and takes Aizen's letter with her.

The episode adapts material from chapters 161 through 163 and belongs to the Soul Society rescue storyline. The anime expands the fight considerably, adding extra exchanges of blade petals, the tornado that forms during Ichigo's bankai release, and the sequence of him deflecting the whole of Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. Notably, Ichigo's spiritual pressure is colored blue here rather than the golden hue the manga used, and Byakuya shields himself with his petals during the release, a detail absent from the source pages. A short comedic segment features Yuzu visiting the Urahara Shop and gifting Jinta a plush charm.
