Leaving his lieutenant broken and bleeding on the floor, Sousuke Aizen strolls out with Gin Ichimaru just as Tōshirō Hitsugaya arrives to the shock of seeing his supposed corpse standing whole. Aizen greets him, remarks that he returned earlier than planned, and Gin guesses that Izuru Kira must have failed to hold him. When Hitsugaya demands to know where Hinamori is, Aizen points him toward the dark room, where he discovers her limp on the ground. Feigning regret at being found out, Aizen muses that he ought to have hidden the pieces of her, and confesses that he and Gin have plotted together from the start, having never regarded anyone else as his true second.

Aizen coolly recasts his long deception as the fault of others for failing to perceive who he really was, and dismisses Hinamori's years of devoted effort as the very thing that made her simple to use, the reason he drew her into his division in the first place. He leaves Hitsugaya with the maxim that admiration sits farthest of all from true understanding. Enraged, the captain releases a surge of power that levels the Seijōtōkyorin and drives the pair outside, then activates his Bankai, Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, sprouting vast wings of ice, a dragon sheathing one arm, claws on the other hand, and three floating lotuses of frozen petals.

Hitsugaya's vow to kill draws only mockery from Aizen, who warns that rash threats betray weakness before opening a single deep wound across the captain's chest, shattering the ice Bankai as he falls. The chapter appears in the twentieth volume within the Soul Society arc and was adapted into the sixtieth episode of the anime.
