Amid the frozen wreckage of the chamber where Tōshirō Hitsugaya lies fallen, Sousuke Aizen prepares to leave with Gin Ichimaru but is stopped by Retsu Unohana and her lieutenant Isane Kotetsu. Unohana, refusing to call him captain, guesses he chose the Seijōtōkyorin because its absolute seclusion made it the ideal refuge for a man who staged his own death with a corpse double. Aizen corrects her: he never came to hide, and the false body was no doll but something he had held in plain hand the entire time, concealed from their eyes until now.

Releasing Kyōka Suigetsu, Aizen bursts the fake corpse apart and lets his inverted blade sink into the platform, naming its power complete hypnosis. He confirms Isane's guess that the earlier gathering of lieutenants, where he presented the sword as a water type that bewilders foes into killing one another, was the moment he ensnared them all. His Kanzen Saimin, he explains, overrides every sense so victims perceive whatever he wishes, a fly for a dragon or a swamp for a garden, and it takes hold the instant a person witnesses the blade's release, renewing with each release thereafter. When Unohana seizes on the word see, Aizen confirms the spell cannot touch the blind, revealing that Kaname Tōsen has been his agent all along.

As Tōsen wraps a long cloth around Renji Abarai and Rukia Kuchiki elsewhere and Gin mirrors the technique in the compound, Aizen praises Unohana's unusually thorough inspection of his decoy before vanishing in light. Renji reappears on Sōkyoku Hill to find Aizen at his back, ordering him to set Rukia down and leave. The chapter is part of the Soul Society arc, appears in the twentieth volume, and was adapted into the sixtieth episode of the anime.
