Summary

Retrieving the blade he had wedged into the tower, Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez vaults to the summit while Ichigo Kurosaki stands quiet below. Calling him pathetic for lacking any real will to kill, Grimmjow flickers behind him with Sonido and slashes at his footing, forcing Ichigo to spring away and parry the follow-up upside down with his Bankai as the two carve through the air in a rapid trade of blows.

When Grimmjow asks his purpose, Ichigo answers that he came to save Orihime Inoue, but the Espada notes that his first act was not to spirit her to safety and taunts him for failing to sense what has been done to her within. Alarmed, Ichigo demands to know if they harmed her, and Grimmjow savors the expression before insisting Ichigo really came to fight, arguing that a Shinigami and a Hollow are driven by instinct to clash to the death as their kinds have for a thousand years. Whoever remains standing, he says, earns the right to live.

After several more exchanges, Ichigo's Getsuga Tensho and Grimmjow's Cero collide, but the Cero bores through and streaks at Ichigo, who barely twists clear before Grimmjow appears behind him and cuts him despite the block. Dropping to the sands, Grimmjow plants his sword, nicks his finger on the edge, and grants that Ichigo is doing well yet is still not the foe he wants. Raising his bleeding hand, he declares he will loose the ultimate Cero reserved for the Espada, and as Ichigo realizes Orihime and Nel Tu stand right behind him, Grimmjow fires a colossal Gran Rey Cero. When the dust settles, Ichigo stands unharmed before the two, his Hollow mask summoned to blunt the blast, and a smirking Grimmjow remarks that the one he was after has finally shown up.
