Everything But the Rain

Standing before the Kurosaki Clinic in the rain, Ichigo Kurosaki realizes he is back in his Human body even though he left it at the Urahara Shop, and suspects his father moved it. He flees before Isshin can catch him and takes shelter at Ikumi Unagiya's apartment, where she dries his coat and likens his mood to a teenager who has quarreled with her parents. Ashamed of being expelled from the Soul King Palace without mending his Zanpakutō, Ichigo can barely face his friends or father.

Ikumi pelts him with a hot dumpling, headbutts him, and insists he treat her like an older sister he can lean on, brushing off his reminder that she is only ten years his senior. A phantom doorbell reveals Isshin waiting outside in his Shinigami form, and Ichigo departs for home. After he leaves, Ikumi finds his Substitute Shinigami Badge under a towel and resolves to return it the next day.

Back at the clinic, Isshin drops his cheerful act and confirms that Urahara told him everything, that Ichigo cannot repair his Bankai while he knows nothing about himself. Reminding his son of a long-ago promise to wait until he was ready, Isshin declares the moment has arrived, admitting he is neither a true Shinigami nor an ordinary Human. In a memory, a young Masaki rushes through the rain to heal a wounded Isshin in a captain's haori and introduces herself as a Quincy.

Ichigo returns to Karakura Town shattered by his rejection at the Royal Palace. Ikumi Unagiya shelters him and later finds his abandoned Substitute Shinigami Badge. Isshin confirms he knows of Ichigo's failure and prepares to reveal his hidden past. A flashback shows Isshin's first meeting with the young Quincy Masaki.

The chapter opens the "Everything But the Rain" flashback sequence that unveils Isshin and Masaki's history during the Thousand-Year Blood War arc. Its events were adapted in Episode 377, "Everything But the Rain."
