BLEACH on the BEACH!!

Ukitake kicks off the inaugural Seaside Art Competition, inviting everyone present to team up in pairs or trios and craft the finest sculpture out of sand. Renji grumbles about playing in the dirt and Rangiku would rather do anything else, until Ukitake reveals the winners take home a cash reward from Yamamoto, sending the whole crowd scrambling to begin exactly as he predicted.

Paired with Rangiku, Orihime asks about fetching a bucket to dampen the sand, only for Rangiku to suggest an alarming alternative that horrifies Ichigo. Renji and Ikkaku pull Ichigo into a race to burrow to the center of the sand fortress they have built, goading him past his protests that it is a children's game, while Yachiru slips a crab into Ikkaku's loincloth. Nearby, Rukia proudly finishes a lumpy version of her rabbit mascot, then deflates at the sight of Byakuya's exquisitely detailed Wakame Ambassador beside it.

Worn down by the heat, Ukitake asks his third seat Sentaro to wake him when it ends and lies down for a rest. Sentaro heaps sand into a windbreak, Kiyone scolds him and fetches flower petals for shade, and a stick of incense is added, until the sleeping captain resembles a man laid out at his own funeral, a tableau that wins Sentaro and Kiyone the contest. Off to the side, Hitsugaya sits in a self-made patch of ice eating shaved treats, flatly explaining he skipped the whole thing because he cannot stand the heat.

Ukitake announces a sand-sculpting contest with a cash prize, motivating the reluctant officers. Ichigo is dragged into a race through Renji and Ikkaku's sand fortress. Rukia is outdone by Byakuya's meticulous sculpture. Sentaro and Kiyone's fussing over the resting Ukitake accidentally produces a funeral-like scene that wins the competition. Hitsugaya opts out entirely, escaping the heat with shaved ice.

This is a comedic bonus chapter appended to the twenty-ninth volume of Bleach, THE SLASHING OPERA, alongside the Hueco Mundo battle chapters. It was adapted into the anime as part of episode 228, the beach-themed Summer! Sea! Swimsuit Festival. The lighthearted side story steps entirely away from the main plot for a Soul Society vacation gag.
