Appearance

Tall and lean, Barem wears his dark hair long, brushed back past his ears save for a single lock that spills down his brow and meets his right eyebrow. While he served under Makima's control, he dressed in the regulation suit and necktie of a Public Safety hunter. His look shifts once he joins the church: the hair gets bound into a ponytail, and he takes to a white button shirt, matching white trousers, and black suspenders, with that same necktie now stowed in his breast pocket.

His Hybrid state is monstrous. Three enormous fuel tanks sprout where his head should be, his neck collapses into a tangle of machinery, and both arms reshape into oversized flamethrowers built for incineration.

Personality

For much of his early appearances Barem's true character stayed buried beneath Makima's conditioning, though even then he proved sharp enough to spot the Chainsaw Devil's weakened condition and unhinged enough to level a building in a fit of glee. His later return strips away any ambiguity: he is revealed as a callous psychopath who can casually float the idea of killing Asa Mitaka simply to bait Denji into transforming. He waves off his own atrocities as mere products of human nature and assumes God will pardon him in the end.

A streak of childish, warped humor runs through him. He needles Denji over an imagined infatuation with Asa and greets people by jamming fingers up Denji's nose, yet his cruelty knows no floor when a goal is at stake. He will order Nayuta's death to provoke Denji's rage, and he trades his scheme to murder Asa for the idea of torching Denji's pets instead, reasoning that Denji loves them more and that they burn easily. What anchors all of it is an unbroken worship of Makima. Even after her death and his release from her grip, his devotion holds; when Nayuta tries to seize control of him, he throttles her and declares that his loyalty remains fixed on Makima alone. Convinced she could have struck down the Death Devil and ushered in an orderly peace, he brands Denji the man who wrecked that future and frames the burning of Denji's home as fitting payment.

Abilities

Barem's power stems from his Hybrid physiology, triggered by biting down on a specific molar. The shift hands him a body far tougher, faster, and stronger than a typical Hybrid, enough to stand toe to toe with the likes of Katana Man and Chainsaw Man. His transformed arms function as flamethrowers capable of unleashing fire fierce enough to engulf a whole floor of a building or set an entire swarm of zombies ablaze.

Like other Hybrids, he mends himself by drinking blood, able to rebuild his body in full from grievous wounds. This makes him effectively impossible to put down for good. He can endure being torn apart, riddled with gunfire, and battered by trauma that would finish off most Devils. Should he actually die, anyone who presses that same molar restores him to flawless condition.
