Fumiko Mifune

At twenty-two she still dresses and carries herself like a schoolgirl, most often in the same Fourth East High School uniform Asa Mitaka and her classmates wear. Her black hair is cut short and looks deliberately messy, with the front strands gathered into a small tail on either side of her face. The feature people notice is her stare: oversized eyes filled with huge dark irises ringed by red, an oddity that may stem from a devil pact much as it did for Akane Sawatari. A broad, faintly unsettling grin tends to sit on her face. Off duty she swaps the uniform for black trousers and a cropped top that bares her stomach, and her work brings out the standard Public Safety suit. Others tend to call the overall look cute.

The grin and the bubbly manner are a mask. Underneath, Fumiko is a cold pragmatist who would gladly trade ten thousand children's lives to seal her pact with the Aging Devil, dressing the slaughter up as a push toward humanity's next stage. She shows no real feeling for anyone, a detachment she may use her devil contracts to maintain; reminded that Denji's pets burned to death, she shrugs them off as only pets. On the job she is barely present, choosing karaoke over guarding her charge, leaking secrets without thinking, and treating a brawl as something fun to join rather than a duty. Her fixation on Denji is real but shallow. She insists she loves the boy behind Chainsaw Man and not the devil inside him, having watched him weep and recognized a teenager trapped in a killer's role, yet she will not risk her own neck for him and cheerfully asks to keep his hair and nails as souvenirs. When the tide turns against her, she honors the only promise that matters to her, abandoning Public Safety for the side more likely to survive, even cutting down a fellow hunter to do it.

For all her bravado, Fumiko is a green and clumsy hunter who repeatedly fails to shield Denji or Nayuta and often has to be bailed out by steadier veterans such as Quanxi. Her real threat lies in two devil pacts. Through the STD Devil, any person who sleeps with her unprotected is rewritten into a flawless copy of her, and she has seeded these doubles across the planet to build a single mind spread through countless bodies. Because of it she can watch events worldwide and shrug off death itself, simply continuing through another copy whenever one is destroyed; the duplicates even drift into separate personalities and fears, and each can forge its own contract. Her bond with the Aging Devil lets it sacrifice any organ from her body to cleave an enemy apart, though every cut wracks her with pain, and the danger falls only on the lone copy that holds that pact. She rounds this out with practical skill, swinging a baseball bat well enough to disarm a gunman and handling a pistol to stop Barem from shifting into his hybrid form.
