Appearance

The Devil manifests as an enormous limbless torso that hangs in the air, its organs laid bare, a brain among them sprouting tentacles that tether it to the zombies in its pack. Off to the right side of that trunk juts a large human face, oddly severed from any neck or proper head. Its duel with Denji costs it an eye and ends with its body split clean in two.

Personality

A deep loathing of humankind drives him, sharpest of all against Devil Hunters, whom he blames for slaughtering his own kind and therefore hunts in return. He shows a measure of guile too, having lured the Yakuza neatly into his trap.

History

The Zombie Devil struck a bargain to lend a crime syndicate his strength, but since that strength converts people into zombies, the gangsters became his thralls instead. He drew Denji to a derelict building and set his undead horde on him, only for the boy to rise again as Chainsaw Man, carve through the zombies, and bury a blade in the Devil's skull.

His handiwork outlived that defeat. Zombies left behind fed later schemes, and Makima eventually wields him directly, converting her own hunters into the undead during her pursuit of Denji and Power and again in her final showdown. His power flows from kinemortophobia, the fear of the living dead, and lets him not only transform and spread his zombies through bites but even reanimate corpses, all while he mends himself on consumed blood. In an altered reality where Pochita never came to be, he and the Debt Collector try once more to finish Denji, only to be cut down by Power.
