The series opener introduces Denji, a debt-ridden teenager who hunts Devils for the Yakuza alongside his chainsaw-bodied partner Pochita. Betrayed and killed by the mob, he fuses with the little Devil and is reborn as the monstrous Chainsaw Man.
Denji scrapes by as a teenage Devil Hunter, slaying monsters for the Yakuza to chip away at the crushing debt his late father left him. His only companion is Pochita, a small chainsaw-bodied Devil who doubles as his weapon. After felling the Tomato Devil, Denji is handed a fraction of the promised bounty once the broker skims off fees and interest, leaving him with almost nothing and dreaming of simple luxuries like bread with jam.
His fortunes collapse when the Yakuza lure him to an abandoned factory. They have sold themselves to the Zombie Devil, who craves dead Devil Hunters, and his power has already turned them into the undead. The mob hacks Denji apart and dumps him with Pochita. As Denji's blood revives the little Devil, Pochita recalls a wish his friend once voiced, that Pochita take over his body so he might live an ordinary life. Pochita instead merges with him, offering his heart in exchange for a chance to witness Denji's dreams.
Reborn with chainsaws bursting from his head and arms, Denji shreds the zombie horde and splits the Zombie Devil in half. At dawn, Makima of Public Safety arrives to the carnage. Sensing he is neither wholly human nor Devil, she spares him and lays out a choice: die as a monster, or be kept as her hunter, fed and housed. Won over by the promise of a proper breakfast, Denji agrees.
Denji kills the Tomato Devil and is shortchanged by the Debt Collector. The Yakuza, now slaves of the Zombie Devil, murder Denji and Pochita. Pochita fuses with Denji's torn body and becomes his heart, granting him the power to become Chainsaw Man.
Denji destroys the Zombie Devil and its horde, then is discovered by Makima, who takes him into Public Safety rather than killing him.
