Summary

Makima brings Denji to the Devil Hunters headquarters in Tokyo and walks him through how the Public Safety branch operates, though he is too busy fantasizing a future at her side to absorb much. She hands him a uniform, introduces Aki Hayakawa, and assigns him to shadow Aki for the day. Denji whines that he would rather stick with Makima, and she promises that doing well could earn him that.

Out on patrol, Aki corners Denji in a dead end and beats him, urging him to quit. He argues that recruits with shallow motives die first and pegs Denji's only interest as Makima. When Aki threatens to report that Denji fled in fear, Denji nails him in the crotch, explaining that the groin is the only place he hits men, that this was the first day he felt human and got fed, and that he wants to keep living that way. Aki retaliates but folds after another shot below the belt. Back at headquarters, Denji blames a Testicle Devil, which Aki exposes as a lie. The two admit their friction, and Makima slots both into Aki's experimental squad. She then warns Denji that if he flees or resigns, he will be destroyed as a Devil, since he can transform into one. Afterward Denji turns over whether Makima is good or bad, and recalling her embrace, he decides he simply wants another hug.
