Appearance

Towering even over his own mother and father, Jiji is a tall, powerfully built teenager. He keeps his red hair cropped, the fringe dropping to his eyebrows save for one upward tuft that bares the very middle of his brow, and his eyes are brown. His good looks make him a hit with the girls at school. At his debut he turned up in a tracksuit worn over an undershirt, while his school outfit pairs the Kami High blazer with a collared shirt and tie, belted jeans, and dark hoop earrings.

Personality

Cheerful and bursting with energy, Jiji reacts to everything in oversized, theatrical fashion, forever turning plain or grave moments into a performance with sweeping gestures. That immaturity can cross lines. When he moved into the Ayase household, he spun a lie for Miko and Kei, claiming a gushing romance between himself and Momo, which enraged her and earned him a beating for the embarrassment. The same habit, mocking her for keeping her grandmother's tradition, had splintered their childhood friendship and soured her on their later reunion; he eventually confesses the bluster comes from how poorly he handles his real feelings around her. Away from that, he is warm and sociable, making friends fast, which is why Okarun unexpectedly enjoyed talking with him on the train despite seeing him as a romantic rival over Momo and later called him a treasured friend. Jiji prizes his bonds and works to be a reliable protector, and for all his clowning he owns real responsibility, throwing himself into Seiko's ki training so the Evil Eye could not hijack his body. He apologizes sincerely too, to Momo for his cruelty and to the Evil Eye after fearfully misjudging it, even vowing to play with the lonely yokai whenever it wished. He also flirts openly with girls he finds pretty, asking a classmate for her number the moment he spots her during his class introduction.

History

In their youth Jiji and Momo Ayase were close, and unknown to him he was her very first crush. Their friendship cracked when he rudely teased her for taking up the ritual her grandmother Seiko prescribed, and contact between them faded after his family moved up into the mountains. Later, odd events started troubling his home, though his parents dismissed what he reported. A spirit then began confronting him head-on, showing up wherever he looked and even haunting his dreams until sleep escaped him, while both his father and mother were hospitalized by a sudden illness. With nowhere else to turn, the family brought in respected spirit mediums for an exorcism, but it went disastrously wrong, three of the five taking their own lives. Told that Seiko was the only option left, Jiji got in touch and was permitted to stay at her home until the matter was settled, which reunited him with Momo and turned him into the Evil Eye's vessel. Once Okarun reined the yokai in, Jiji stood among the handful who back Momo and Okarun in the search for the latter's kintama. His true name, Jin Enjoji, evokes compassion, and he is said to take it from Guido, or Gigi, of Michael Ende's novel Momo, the same book that inspired Momo Ayase's name.
