Menma Namikaze

The surest way to tell Menma apart from Naruto sits on the back of his jacket, where a green disc holds five red dots, one centred and four linked by crossed lines, in place of the familiar Uzumaki swirl. Otherwise the resemblance is near total. His blond hair simply runs longer and shaggier, with jaw-length bangs that echo his father Minato. He dresses in the slim black-and-orange gear Naruto wears through Part II, finishing the look with fingerless black gloves, a long dark forehead cloth, and ankle-high zori.

Where Naruto took after Kushina's loud warmth, Menma mirrors his father's temperament. He is quiet and deliberate, speaking only when words serve a point, and he reads situations quickly enough to be counted the brightest of his graduating year. That insight, paired with a calm authority, makes him the group's unofficial leader. He keeps others at arm's length, answering even his parents curtly and flatly refusing the affections of Sakura and Hinata. Beneath the cool surface, though, he is fiercely devoted to the people he values. He quietly watched over Tenten when her behaviour shifted, threw himself into clearing her name when she was accused of treason, and let a rare smile show when he thanked her for helping him win.

Menma's life splits from Naruto's at its root: the Nine-Tailed Fox's attack never costs him his parents, so he grows up with his mother and father both present and a wide circle of friends. Kurama passes safely from Kushina to Menma without her death, and the two become early companions rather than a hostile seal. He finishes the Academy, joins Team Kakashi beside Sakura and Sasuke, and rises to chunin. As an Uzumaki descendant he carries enormous chakra, vitality, and a strong healing factor, and as Kurama's willing partner he can enter the Nine-Tails Chakra Mode and even project a full-sized fox avatar, letting him trade blows with a figure as fearsome as Hanzo.

His part in the dream centres on Tenten. After she turns cold toward the team and is branded a traitor for supposedly leaking intelligence to Amegakure, Menma, who has quietly been shadowing her, works out that a spy posing as a travelling merchant framed her to distract the village. He convinces the village leadership of her innocence, frees her, and admits that although she is not quite the Tenten he remembers, he still counts her a friend. The two then meet Hanzo's invasion together; when the Amegakure leader calls up a giant salamander, Tenten answers with the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths, and their combined effort routs the attackers. The village's applause finally convinces Tenten that she belongs, and she gives up her attempts to break free of the illusion.
