Function

The cover is a flat black with no writing on it, matching the look of the others of its kind. Rem puts the notebook to its most consequential use when she kills both Watari and L to keep Misa safe, an act that costs the shinigami her life and reduces her to dust. With Rem gone, the abandoned book becomes property of the living world, and Light gathers it up from the remains she leaves behind.

Notable Users

Ownership runs first through Rem, then Light, who much later passes it to Ryuk to bind the shinigami to it before lending it to the task force for the fight against the mafia. Soichiro Yagami takes it up and bargains with Ryuk to gain the Shinigami Eyes. Aizawa eventually carries it to the Yellowbox Warehouse, where Near commits the book to the flames and wipes it from the human world. The live-action The Last Name diverges, having Rem destroy the book outright so Light can never wield it before she dies shielding Misa.
