Blood Demon Art

Character

A Blood Demon Art is a personalized supernatural power that stronger demons develop after consuming enough humans. Each one draws on the demon's own blood as the medium for its effects, and the theme typically reflects that demon's history, character, or former trade.

Overview

Introduced in Chapter 7 and the fourth anime episode, a Blood Demon Art is a unique ability that surfaces once a demon has eaten enough humans to grow sufficiently powerful. No two are identical. Each is organized around a guiding motif, such as combat, slumber, or the ocean, and that motif almost always traces back to the demon's past, temperament, beliefs, hobbies, or occupation. A single art is not limited to one effect; many bundle several powers under one shared concept.

Every one of these abilities relies on the wielder's blood to take physical form, which is why the practice amounts to a kind of blood magic. Some demons release their art straight from their bodies at will, while others channel it through tools grown from their own flesh. A few demons, such as Tamayo and Nezuko, must actually bleed through injury before their art will activate. Genya Shinazugawa is an unusual exception: though he is not a true demon, he can borrow an art temporarily by eating pieces of especially strong demons. These powers should not be confused with the more general demon traits like regeneration or flesh manipulation.

Mechanics

Range of effects

The powers vary enormously. Some are built for direct fighting, like conjuring numerous blades, while others lean toward utility, such as steering an entire castle or weaving illusions. Certain arts are simple and instantly readable, like commanding electricity or ice, and others are far stranger, like firing unseen arrows that redirect a target's momentum or rewriting a victim's biology. A handful of arts can even be hybridized with a Breathing Style, fusing supernatural force into already lethal swordwork, as seen with Moon Breathing and Thunder Breathing in the hands of former human swordsmen turned demons. There is also evidence that an art can be passed along, since the spider-themed demon Rui granted spider traits and powers to those he adopted into his so-called family.

Weaknesses

Because these abilities are spun from demon flesh and blood, they share the same vulnerabilities as their creators. Sunlight and Nichirin weapons both dispel them, dissolving the constructs on contact. They also depend on the demon's blood supply; when a demon's blood runs low, the art cannot be summoned at all. This was demonstrated when an Upper Rank, pinned by blood-draining trees, lost the ability to call forth his crescent blades.
