Akito is the youngest member of his generation within the Ubuyashiki family. His elder brother Senri, embittered by his own illness and by their father's suicide under the burden of leading the clan, pressures Akito into setting the family mansion on fire and joining him in a shared suicide.

Their mother dies in the blaze while trying to rescue them, and Kagaya is left as the only member of the immediate family to survive the fire.
