Hanako Kamado

Hanako is a little girl with pale skin and black hair reaching her shoulders, cut into bangs that sit just above her eyebrows. Her large eyes are a dark red that grows lighter along the lower rim of each iris, and her pupils are white, the same trait her relatives carry. She wears a peach iromuji kimono over a white underlayer, finished with a soft pink haori, a darker peach obi, and a pink cord.

She is the last-born daughter of Tanjuro and Kie and the younger sibling of Tanjiro, Nezuko, and Takeo, with the boys Shigeru and Rokuta completing the family. Being a plain human, she holds no special abilities at all.

Her life ends when Muzan falls upon the household while Tanjiro is away in town trading charcoal. He returns to find his mother and brothers and sisters butchered, with Nezuko the lone survivor and by that point turned into a demon. Hanako numbers among the slain in the massacre that sets the entire story in motion.

It is revealed later that Muzan came after the Kamados while hunting for a demon able to endure sunlight, and he dismissed the effort as a loss once the family was killed, never realizing Nezuko had survived. Hanako's death is thus tied to the larger plot that propels the series.

Though she has died, Hanako returns at pivotal moments. During Tanjiro's grueling fight against Daki, a vision of his smallest sister rises before him, begging him to keep breathing, and that appeal pulls him back as he pushes past what his body can endure.

Her given name joins the reading for flower with the familiar feminine ending meaning child, while the surname evokes an old wood-or-charcoal cooking hearth, likely a nod to the family's former livelihood. She is also noted to have owned a wooden puzzle box, a small touch linking her to everyday life in the Kamado household.
