Summary

The 50th anime episode and sixth of the third season adapts material from chapters 113 through 115. Having severed four demon necks without killing them, Tanjiro deduces that a concealed fifth body directs the manifestations and begins tracking its scent. Muichiro remains imprisoned in Gyokko's water pot, slowly suffocating. The episode devotes much of its length to Genya's past, exposing the abuse the Shinazugawa siblings suffered and the night their mother became a demon, before Tanjiro intervenes to keep Genya alive as the search for the true Hantengu continues.

Key Events

The fifth scent

Tanjiro frees Nezuko from the rubble and detects a hidden fifth presence. After clearing his nose of the village's hot-spring smell, he narrows the demon's location to nearby bushes, where the cowering Hantengu has dwindled to a mouse-sized form and quietly directs his manifestations.

Genya's resolve

Genya grabs Tanjiro and vows to reach Hashira rank first, then comes to believe Tanjiro's claim about the hidden demon. He chases the tiny Hantengu but cannot pierce its neck, his blade snapping and his shotgun proving useless.

The Shinazugawa past

Facing death, Genya recalls his violent father, his devoted mother, and the night she returned home transformed and slaughtered four of his siblings. Sanemi tackled the creature outside, but Genya, mistaking the truth, branded his brother a murderer. Tanjiro saves Genya from Sekido, urging him onward, and Genya then takes the brunt of Aizetsu's Weeping Spears to protect him.

Notes

The second eyecatcher recreates chapter 114's cover. The anime adds Tanjiro freeing Nezuko from debris and explicitly shows Nezuko and Genya engaging Karaku and Urogi while Tanjiro concentrates, a detail only implied in the source. Genya's family flashback gains an extra scene of Sanemi setting out to find their mother and reminding Genya of his promise. The sibling sleeping in Genya's arms is changed from Shuya in the manga to Koto in the anime.
