Henning

Henning wears the standard gear of the Survey Corps and keeps his hair cropped short, with strands that appear swept toward the rear of his head. Supplemental material lists him at 175 cm and 72 kg.

The story reveals almost nothing of his character directly. His decision to enlist with the Survey Corps rather than one of the safer military branches suggests a man committed to battling the Titans for the sake of humanity's future.

Mike Zacharias selects Henning as one of several soldiers assigned to watch over a group of Survey Corps recruits suspected of harboring a traitor. The assignment collapses when Titans are reported inside Wall Rose, and Mike divides his forces into four squads to alert the surrounding villages. Riding under Nanaba's command, Henning scours the Wall for an opening, only to meet Gelgar's squad approaching from the opposite direction with nothing to report; no breach exists. With darkness falling, both squads bed down inside Utgard Castle.

Titans that can move by night descend on the castle hours later. While the equipped soldiers battle outside, Henning and Lynne break off to check on the rookies sheltering within the tower. A projectile hurled by the Beast Titan strikes during the assault, and both soldiers die instantly.

Late in the battle for Shiganshina District, Erwin Smith pictures Henning among the many fallen comrades in his mind, silently asking whether their deaths carried meaning.
