Kiseru Gankubi

A tall teenager with tanned skin, Kiseru wears his shoulder-length dreadlocks gathered into a ponytail. Blue-irised eyes sit under heavy brows and give him a hard, watchful look. He dresses simply in a white undershirt, a grey vest, grey pants, and black sandals, keeping his headband clipped to a pouch on his left hip rather than his forehead.

In his undercover role he comes across as scrappy and stubborn, hammering at a locked cell long after it is clearly hopeless. He has a warm side too, teaming up with Boruto to keep the trapped civilians alive through Ōga's trials and pressing him to stay hopeful even after some of them perish. His mission forces him to hide things, including a working communication device, and once suspicion falls on him he grows cold and combative, unable to explain himself. His own Anbu colleagues worry about what the long isolation, suspecting everyone while being suspected in turn, has done to his mind, yet his loyalty runs deep enough that he volunteers for a perilous search to recover a lost friend.

Trained as an Anbu, Kiseru overwhelms superior numbers through misdirection and tactics, and he is a gifted Fire Release user who can hurl blasts and flaming arrows, cloak himself in fire, burrow through earth with it, and screen his approach behind the flames; his teammates also credit him with advanced medical skill and a spy's knack for holding back his real strength. His ordeal in the Labyrinth Game began aboard the Thunder Train, where the passengers woke sealed inside Ōga's maze and forced through deadly trials. Kiseru fought to break free, recognized Boruto as a fellow leaf shinobi, and again and again put himself between danger and the weaker captives, lowering a rope as a ladder over a crumbling chasm and helping the group outwit each test. Suspicion eventually turned on him after Batta stole the hidden communication device his mission required him to conceal, and framed for her death, he lashed out at those hunting him while refusing to explain. Only when he grasped that the entire labyrinth was a genjutsu did the pieces fall into place; he stabbed Boruto with a technique that broke the illusion's hold, and once the true Ōga was undone and everyone freed, he was at last reunited with the friend he had crossed into danger to find.
