Kūi Dōtonbori

Kūi is a heavily muscled man, standing as tall as his son Daore is wide, which makes him very tall indeed. In the novel he goes about without a shirt.

Brash and sure of himself, Kūi writes off most opponents as small eaters not worth his attention and saves his real interest for Chōji Akimichi, the one man who keeps beating him. When Chōji fails to even recall their past bouts, Kūi takes deep offence and swears to crush him, sneering at anyone who falters along the way.

Kūi and Daore roam from one eating contest to the next, and a long history of losses to Chōji has cemented the Akimichi as Kūi's great rival. When Konohagakure's yearly eating competition lands on Parent and Child Day, opening it only to parents and their children, the pair enter and reach the final as one of three surviving teams. Shikamaru and Shikadai Nara are disqualified for vomiting, Daore passes out, and Chōji chokes on stray lettuce, leaving Kūi to gloat over their weakness. Certain of victory, he digs into the closing course of dumplings from Ankorodō, only for the shop owner's meddling to leave him retching, and Chōji and Chōchō Akimichi are crowned the winners.

The anime reworks the ending, casting Kūi and his son as accomplices of the Ankorodō owner, who rigs the food in the Dōtonbori's favour until Boruto Uzumaki swaps the tampered bowls and the scheme unravels, earning all three a scolding from Shikamaru. Later, hunting for new clothes at a Konoha flea market, the two wind up buying from none other than Chōji and Chōchō, fuming that the Akimichi still do not recognise them.
