Yūgao Uzuki

Yugao is a young woman whose straight purple hair falls to her waist, paired with warm brown eyes and a deep red lipstick. In Anbu service she dons the porcelain cat mask, its face crossed by three red stripes, one running down the forehead and one over each cheek, together with the black-and-grey armor, metal arm guards, and a katana slung across her back. The unit's tattoo sits on her right shoulder. When she supported the Logistical Support and Medical Division during the Fourth Shinobi World War, she gathered her hair into a ponytail and wore the standard Konoha flak jacket beneath a long pale-blue medical cloak, though she shed the disguise for her Anbu gear the moment fighting began.

What little the manga shows paints Yugao as caring and loyal, someone who throws herself fully into everything she takes on and finds quiet joy in watching the moon, a fitting echo of her name. The anime deepens this considerably: Hayate's death scarred her so profoundly that she shrank from any kind of combat, unable to move past the grief until Sakura pushed her to confront it.

Anime accounts trace her recruitment into the Anbu to a young age, chosen for her swordsmanship and sensory gift. Early on she served beneath Kakashi Hatake and looked up to him as a mentor. Four years after the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's attack, she carried the Third Hokage's summons to Danzo and returned in time to help save Kakashi and the Wood Release user known as Kinoe from Danzo's reprisal. Years later she replaced Itachi Uchiha on Team Ro under Kakashi, and while investigating the Uchiha's downfall she was the one who discovered the lone survivor, Sasuke Uchiha. Around this period Hayate Gekko became her kenjutsu instructor, and their training together blossomed into love.

Her craft covered several fields. A gift for sealing objects into scrolls earned her a place in the Logistical Support and Medical Division, where she stored fallen shinobi and assisted with basic care, and her tracking and sensory ability made her the obvious choice to recover stolen remains. In blade work she nearly matched Hayate himself, wielding techniques such as the Dance of the Crescent Moon and Hazy Moon Night to strike with blinding, intricate motion.

During the Chunin Exams, after Kabuto Yakushi slew the guards watching Sasuke at the hospital, Yugao regrouped with the Third Hokage and Kakashi. Hayate burst in, relieved to find her unharmed, and before setting out to track Kabuto the two vowed to always love one another and to answer each other's call. By the next morning her squad had found his body. Through the Konoha Crush she visited the memorial stone bearing his name, swore vengeance, and fought the invaders alongside her unit, later speaking with Kakashi at the Third Hokage's funeral. She also joined other Anbu in carrying an invitation to the ninja villages when Konoha and Suna arranged an early joint exam, and in the Twelve Guardian Ninja events she helped apprehend Sora, taking injury when he lashed out at Asuma.

The war brought her sharpest ordeal. Guarding the corpses that held valuable secrets like kekkei genkai, she met a reincarnated Hayate, forced by Kabuto to steal the KIA scroll. Unable to raise her blade against her lost love, she let comrades take wounds shielding her and tried to withdraw, until Sakura pressed her on why she could not fight and she admitted that losing Hayate was the sole reason she had left the Anbu. Driven at last to an emotional breaking point, she caught up as Sakura went for the scroll alone. She and Hayate crossed Dance of the Crescent Moon techniques, then she answered his Secret Sword: Moonlight with her Hazy Moon Night. He praised how far her swordsmanship had come, and even as Kabuto seized his mind, Hayate's lingering control kept her safe as she ran him through. With Hayate sealed and the scroll recovered, the mission closed in success.
