Captain Denki's First Mission

Naruto hands Team 5 a B-rank job carrying autonomous puppets to a mine in the Land of Water, the elevated ranking owing to the odds someone will try to steal the newest models. Katasuke briefs them: Doto Island, once a fishing village, has struck gold, but the soft soil makes digging hazardous, so the puppets will handle the work. He wants Denki running the adjustment tests before the researchers arrive, since most of them lean toward analysis over maintenance, and he spends the day walking Denki through how the machines operate. Pressed on the hardest part of development, Katasuke says every stage tested him, stressing the need to adapt as problems surface. He admits he requested Denki's squad after watching him during the Chunin Exams.

The team travels by train and two boats to reach the island, where the excavation head Onami greets them with open disappointment, doubting the sleepy, unassuming Denki is even a shinobi. That night Onami lays out the two-shift security setup, and Denki's puppet demonstration wins over the workers. Two of them trade knowing glances, then seize gold they had stashed and take Onami hostage, shoving him onto Metal and escaping. They lock the mine until the next shift and cut the ventilation, and Denki must stop Iwabee from using Earth Release, which could collapse the shaft.

Studying his data, Denki locates a safe point to dig free with the puppets. The team escapes, tracks the thieves to a boat, and after Iwabee blocks a Water Dragon with an earthen wall, Denki adapts the puppets to snare the vessel so Iwabee can wreck its engine, letting the pair subdue the robbers. Onami later thanks Team 5 and apologizes, and Denki reveals his drowsiness came from studying the mine's layout the whole trip.
