Shippuden episode 455 retraces Itachi's memories as Sasuke watches, following his rise through the Anbu, the burden Shisui leaves him, and the impossible choice that drives him to slaughter his own clan for the sake of the village.
Team 7 waits out the fading light of the Infinite Tsukuyomi while Sasuke turns over Itachi's past. In those memories Fugaku praises his son for joining the Anbu yet insists his loyalty belongs to the clan first. Shisui hands Itachi his one remaining eye and takes his own life, awakening Itachi's Mangekyō Sharingan. When Inabi, Yashiro and Tekka accuse him of murdering Shisui, Itachi beats them down, and Fugaku steps in to demand answers as Sasuke looks on. Declaring there is no future for the Uchiha, Itachi feigns sorrow through his Mangekyō, hoping to make Sasuke grasp how hollow the clan has become.
Promoted to Anbu captain, Itachi reports to Danzō and is drawn into an assassination. Fugaku shows him the Stone Tablet in the Naka Shrine, revealing his own Mangekyō Sharingan and his ambition to become Hokage, and lays out a plan to use Itachi's position for a bloodless coup. Torn, Itachi instead warns the village leaders of the plot. When Danzō issues an ultimatum over the clan's fate, Itachi seeks out Tobi, and the two strike together, Tobi at the police force and Itachi at the compound. Fugaku and Mikoto choose not to resist, exchanging final words before their son tearfully kills them. Itachi gives his last report to Hiruzen, cuts down the Anbu who try to stop him, and departs to join Akatsuki alongside Jūzō Biwa.
