Order of Priority

Tsunade keeps turning the pages of Jiraiya's book. Within its story, Shikamaru warns his squad away from the sinkhole while Teams Kakashi and Guy reach the village and pick up on the disturbance, and Team Kurenai spots the same pit from outside the walls. The Ame Orphans, cast as Team Jiraiya, search for two missing children, and Nagato frets over his Rinnegan. Shikamaru lays out his reasoning for linking up with the other teams first. Team Jiraiya locates a tunnel underground, and Konan recovers a teddy bear left behind by the children before they descend into it.

Team Asuma encounters a woman at prayer, Kaya, who tells them outsiders warned the villagers that the place could become a battlefield and urged them to leave, while also invoking the village's guardian, Lord Mashima. A creature in the tunnels assails Team Jiraiya, but Nagato shields them. Teams Guy and Kakashi discover their captains trapped inside a sphere, and the figure responsible chastises the genin for throwing away allies to obey orders. Naruto and Neji leap into the sphere after the captured shinobi and vanish along with it. Konan pulls the two children clear of the beast in an underground lair, Team Asuma finds a trapdoor beneath a shrine to Mashima, and a second creature surfaces during the fight before Chōji drops in to save Konan and the children and Shikamaru pins one of the monsters. Naruto and Neji rouse in an unfamiliar place before a masked man whose Byakugan Neji recognizes, and the stranger condemns them for placing rules above the children while inviting Neji to uncover what Konoha hides in that village.
