Summary

Kandachi cannot believe a mere child like Tanishi could have bagged a member of the Sannin. Jiraiya, recognising him as the former enforcer of Amegakure's ruler Hanzō, demands to know why he has seized the Genjutsu Tree Village. Kandachi insists the Rain no longer has a leader and turns to thank Tanishi, only for the genuine boy to appear. Naruto drops his disguise, and Kandachi, deciding the child is a conspirator, orders every hostage killed, Tanishi's mother among them.

Key Events

Kandachi calls up the Conch King to swallow the captives, but Jiraiya cuts the ropes binding their cages with a Fire Release: Flame Bullet. Naruto's Rasengan cannot crack the creature's shell, and its Conch Whip lashes him again and again, stirring in Tanishi the memory of his father dying the same way for defying Kandachi. Trapped inside a fog-based genjutsu neither ninja can dispel, the two are freed when Tanishi, choosing to play the fool himself, sets off his Chilli Pepper Bombs to break the illusion. Jiraiya then pins Kandachi and the beast with his Needle Jizō while Naruto builds his Rasengan into a Big Ball Rasengan, downing the Conch King and knocking the warlord cold.

Notes

With the village handed back to its people, Jiraiya remarks on the road out that Naruto stirs memories of his father, Minato. A vision of Minato tells him that since the Fourth once looked on the sage as a father, Naruto would rank as his grandson. Delighted, Jiraiya announces the boy is his grandson and lunges for a hug, only for a squirming Naruto to shove him off. A continuity wrinkle: Kandachi's claim that Hanzō had been ousted sits awkwardly against Jiraiya later infiltrating the Rain still believing Hanzō held power.
