Remon's Secret

During a visit to Remon's home village, Boruto and Konohamaru run into a rigid young man who names himself Kankitsu Akitsuki and claims to be Remon's betrothed. He waves the pair away, citing the coming wedding, and though Konohamaru still holds a handkerchief he means to return, he backs off. Something about the girl's subdued mood and Konohamaru's silence leaves Boruto uneasy. Heading home, the two shinobi encounter Anzu, a child from the same village who has forgotten the route back, so they escort her to her mother.

Kankitsu, meanwhile, tightens his grip on Remon, moving her into a locked, guarded building and pocketing the hair-clip she wears. She resists losing it, since the ornament shields her recollections from a creature called Soma, but she yields once he frames the confinement as protection for everyone in the village.

Anzu's mother is stunned to learn the girl could not recall where her own village sat, an oddity Konohamaru files away. When the boys slip back to Remon's window, she finally lays out her people's legend. Roughly four hundred years earlier, the settlement then called Daidai nearly perished under Soma, a spirit that devours memory. A shrine maiden named Kuen fought the entity and bound it inside a rock, yet a fragment lodged within her, birthing a curse handed down her bloodline. Those who inherit it develop a mark on the hand at twenty and gradually lose their memories.

Remon reveals that she and Kankitsu both trace back to Kuen through separate branches, and that the seal frays once each century. Her hair-clip, another of Kuen's creations, keeps Soma at bay for the women who carry the curse. Repairing the seal demands that a cursed man and woman wed, which is why the marriage cannot simply be skipped. Because the demon has no body, no blade or jutsu can strike it, a truth Konohamaru backs by pointing to the death god his grandfather once bargained with.

The episode falls in the Konohamaru's Love Arc and runs as anime-original material rather than adapting a manga chapter. Boruto remains firmly against Remon binding herself to a man who will not make her happy, but she explains that the tale of Konohamaru's grandfather gave her the resolve to go through with it. Late in the story an elder of the Yoimura family, Asaki, asks the visitors to track where Kankitsu wanders after dark. When Kankitsu later confronts Asaki, she abruptly forgets her own errand, and Konohamaru grows wary as her promised report never comes.
