The Terror! Enko Onikuma

A simple lost-pet errand goes sideways when Enko loses her grip on her clan power and turns violent, begging her squad to flee before she lashes out at Tsuru and Dōshu. Tsuru's hair holds her, Dōshu's restraints back it up, and a blowgun dart finally puts her down. Consulting Konohamaru's Team 7, the group hears that the Onikuma possession summoning never ran wild during their Academy days. Because the rampage hospitalized their sensei, the frightening Ibiki Morino is installed as Team 40's new leader. Convinced Dōshu and Tsuru will never conquer their dread and that no one truly overcomes fear, Ibiki moves to break up the team and put Enko's gifts to use in interrogation.

Team 7 pitches ways to help the pair face their fear, from a scary movie that only rattles Sarada to Mitsuki's plan of exposure at the zoo's giant-maned wolf, none of which quite works. Ibiki learns Enko's episodes stem from her own thoughts and feelings, tracing back to friends recoiling from her clan jutsu. When told the team will be split, Enko erupts, wrecks his blowgun, and flees the village. Ibiki mobilizes to seal or sever her arms but orders the two genin to stay put, they follow anyway, and he reveals the true trigger is loneliness. Shielding them from her attacks, he lets Dōshu and Tsuru apologize until Enko steadies, and Team 40 later completes the mission in harmony, the rescued pet warming to Ibiki.

This is episode 139 of the Boruto anime, first aired in Japan on January 12, 2020, and in English on September 21, 2021. The opening theme is Teenage Dream and the ending theme is Fireworks. The maned wolf the pair visit appears to be the same animal from Team 15's mission back in episode 49.
