Appearance

A tall man well into middle age, Genau wears his light-brown hair short, neatly parted to one side above an undercut. For the exam he dons the deep blue marking a first-class mage: a long coat edged in pale gray that falls to the calf, its collar turned up, paired with a shoulder cape, a plain white cravat, a matching uniform, and brown boots to the knee. On assignment in the cold of the Northern Lands he swaps this for a heavier version, belting a longer tunic beneath a trench coat.

Personality

Genau presents himself as a hard, unfeeling mage. The exam stage he designed was built to breed conflict, and he shows no regret when entrants die for it, drawing a sharp rebuke from Sense. Sent to purge demons from the village where he was born, he claims to feel nothing but indifference at its slaughter, yet Frieren and Methode both sense a savage killing intent in him that gives the lie to that calm. He owns up to being no good man, taking pleasure in battle and accepting the lives spent toward his dream of a peaceful Northern Lands, and while he dismisses the kindhearted as fools, he still recognizes them as good people. When Serie blamed a fallen partner's gentleness for his death, Genau called the man a hero, only for Serie to wave the words away and warn him never to soften.

For all his frost, a strong streak of duty and protectiveness runs through him. He serves Serie loyally, reveres her, and guards her from anyone who edges too close. During the campaign against the Divine Revolte he breaks character to shield a child, not knowing she is a demon in disguise, and is stabbed for it, realizing in that instant that the same impulse had cost his partner his life. He thaws only slowly toward Methode, working with her at Serie's command, and at parting it takes her prompting before he manages to thank Frieren's group for their aid.

History

Genau was raised in a village of the Rufen Region on the Northern Plateau, where one of his boyhood friends grew up to run the local bakery, before he left to chase the rank of first-class mage. At the Grobe Basin he proctors the exam's first stage alongside Sense, who brands his luck-driven test cruel; he counters that any worthy mage would survive it. So certain is he of Serie's supremacy that he refuses to believe her barrier can break even as Denken and Frieren shatter it, and only then does he place Frieren as the Hero Party's elven mage. Later he is paired with Methode to police the Northern Plateau after his previous partner falls protecting a child against the Divine Revolte.

Serie sends him, pointedly, back to his own hometown for the mission, where Fern, Frieren, and Stark arrive to help. While the others hunt the demons, Genau stays behind with Stark to guard the villagers' remains, and the Divine Revolte ambushes the pair. They beat the general down, but his disguised demon accomplice draws Genau into the open and wounds him before he cuts her down. Run through together with Stark when Revolte makes his final push, Genau insists that humans are tougher than the demon imagines, and the pair fell him at last. In battle he forgoes a staff entirely, conjuring his signature niello wings, sharp blades of metal called Digardnacht that let him strike, shield, and fly, while bird-control magic, barriers, and orbs of black, killing mana round out an arsenal fearsome enough that Frieren once mistook him for a demon.
