Episode 22: Future Enemies

With the opening stage settled and a three-day lull before the next, the surviving candidates scatter across Äußerst to pass the time. Frieren, Fern, and Stark reunite at their inn, and after Fern's temper flares over Stark's lazy habits, Frieren treats everyone to a meal at a restaurant she once visited with the heroes. Elsewhere, Denken coaxes a reluctant Richter out to dinner by naming the very establishment where he used to dine with his late wife, and Richter, softened, agrees to come along.

Over their food, Frieren recalls the chef Lecker once vowing his cooking would never change, and Himmel daring him to make that promise their reward. Tasting the dish again, she finds the flavor has shifted yet decides she no longer needs to chase anything better. Übel, meanwhile, corners Land in an alley and explains she can mimic another's magic only when she truly empathizes with them, leaving him wary of how closely she now wants to study him.

The afternoon scatters into smaller moments. Kanne teases Lawine over the frilly dress her family forced on her, the two crossing paths with Frieren and Stark at a bakery as they struggle to find a treat Fern will like. Wirbel borrows Stark to help put down a Fresser at the magic association's request, and the warriors bond afterward over its meat. Kanne thanks Frieren with a basket of sweets, a small kindness that reminds Frieren how Himmel always sought to be remembered through everyday gestures.

A messenger bird then delivers the details of the next trial. Lawine explains the exam usually runs three stages and warns that the candidates will be rivals from here on. The letter names Sense as proctor, a fact that unsettles Kanne and Lawine, since none of the four exams she previously oversaw produced a single passing examinee.

The adaptation supplies original names for several Äußerst locations, among them the Swallow Inn, the Bell restaurant, and the Sun Bakery. Richter receives sugar cubes rather than the wrapped candy of the manga, and a brief added scene shows a kitten and its mother fleeing from Land, hinting that the body in town may be one of his clones.
