Summary

The second trial gathers the eighteen remaining hopefuls outside the Ruins of the King's Tomb, which no team has yet cleared. Their proctor, Sense, sets a single goal, to descend to the deepest level. Because she counts herself a pacifist, she hands each candidate a bottled escape golem crafted by Lernen, warning that smashing it means rescue but also disqualification, and that every bottle will shatter at dawn to mark the deadline. The mages debate whether to band together, but distrust wins out and they fracture into small groups, with Frieren and Fern pressing in first and Sense trailing the pair she judges safest.

Guiding them through the corridors, Frieren credits her dungeon instincts to Himmel, who once insisted on charting every passage so the party could relish the adventure while saving the world. Her curiosity soon backfires when she pries open a chest that Fern's appraisal spell flagged as a mimic, trusting the slim chance of a hidden grimoire, and the creature swallows her whole.

Key Events

Denken leads a larger band that runs into a pair of gargoyle statues. The fight scatters them, hurling Länge into a sealing chamber lined with closing spike walls. Unable to break the magic with Catastravia, Denken orders her to crack her bottle, and the golem hauls her free and up to the surface, a grim lesson that a moment's lapse can be fatal. Fern, after some effort, drags Frieren back out of the mimic, and the two continue mapping the depths with surprising ease.

That smoothness has a cause. As Wirbel's trio advances, Ehre is caught by Sorganeil and senses three hidden mages who turn out to be exact copies of the team itself. The true threat of the tomb reveals itself, a Spiegel that conjures flawless replicas of intruders. Denken's group destroys a clone of Laufen, identical in mana and skill, then opens a door onto a duplicate of Frieren descending to meet them, and the four brace for battle.

Notes

Several sequences were widened for the screen. The gargoyle clash runs longer and has Methode, rather than Laufen, fell the first statue by reflecting its beam, an attack original to the anime since the manga's gargoyles strike physically. The duplicate Laufen likewise falls to Methode's finishing blow, and the Spiegel stirring in the depths is an added scene with no manga counterpart.
