Summary

With Graf Granat treated by a church healer, the lord admits to Fern and Stark that he misjudged their absent mage, since she alone read the demons correctly. He confirms that this elf is the same one who once served beside the Hero, and recalls that his family owes a debt to that group for clearing demons from the region generations earlier. The foe his grandfather struggled against, he reveals, is the very Sage of Destruction now waiting outside the town.

Beyond the walls, Frieren and Aura reckon it has been roughly eighty years since they last crossed paths. The elf asks the demon to withdraw, and when Aura refuses, her headless knights press the attack. Frieren slips past every blow, then channels a counter through her staff that severs Aura's hold over the nearest undead, dropping them where they stand. Aura is stunned, having never seen her command broken, and notes how much mana the feat must have cost. Frieren explains that she once cleared such puppets carelessly until Himmel scolded her for it.

Inside, Stark resolves to leave and beg for Frieren's return, handing Fern the Granat crest so the guards will obey her. The pair are ambushed before they can act. Lügner pins Fern to a wall with his blood, while Linie knocks Stark off the rampart into the clearing below. Fern wrenches loose and turns the interrogation into a duel, her rapid casting steadily overwhelming the demon's superior reserves. Stark, battered by Linie's borrowed techniques, recalls Eisen's rule that a warrior who keeps rising has not lost, and fells her with a single Lightning Strike. The lapse costs Lügner his life as Fern's Zoltraak finds him.

Key Events

Graf Granat lays out why Aura ruled the region unchallenged for so long. Her Scales of Obedience weigh the mana of two combatants, and whoever carries less becomes a permanent thrall. Because no one across five centuries has held more mana than the Sage, the spell renders her effectively untouchable. Only fighters of exceptional will can shrug off the control, and only for an instant. When one knight bearing the family crest once tore loose, Aura answered with the cruelty that earned her name, beheading her slaves to form the silent army she now commands.

Linie reveals the trick behind her shifting arsenal. She studies how mana courses through an opponent and reproduces their movements, conjuring whatever weapon suits the stolen style. Against Stark she mirrors Eisen, the fighter she calls the greatest in history. Stark counters that a copy carries none of the true weight behind each swing, and proves it by walking into her strike to land a finishing blow. Below the wall, Fern works out that Lügner's heart is his weak point and exploits his arrogance, refusing to let his blood magic corner her.

Notes

The adaptation reworks several details from the printed version. The town's defenses differ, trading the manga's uneven ramparts for a tall encircling wall where Fern and Lügner clash. Both apprentice battles run longer on screen, and Linie's weapon set expands to include a spear and dagger alongside the blade and axe drawn in print. The cow-like creatures in Fern's memory scatter into mana particles when slain, marking them as monsters, though they leave no such trace in the source. Stark's training flashback relocates beside the dwarf dwellings rather than a forest cliff, and a brief cut to the Fern fight produces a firework-like flourish just before Linie falls. The episode also has Lügner name Zoltraak aloud as a demon-slaying spell at the moment it strikes him.
