Summary

Disturbed that a dozen candidates cleared a stage she blames on Frieren's overwhelming presence, Serie arrives at the northern branch and announces she will personally screen all twelve rather than risk weaker mages dying in a normal final trial. Trusting only her instinct, she dismisses Kanne, Dunste, Laufen, Scharf, and Ehre for being unable to picture themselves as first-class mages, the one thing she insists magic demands. Frieren too is turned away, partly over their long disagreement about what magic should be.

Offered a last chance, Frieren names the flower-field spell Flamme taught her as her favorite, and Serie scoffs and rejects her. Before leaving, Frieren warns that Serie will be unable to fail Fern, since the girl will surpass every expectation as proof the age of humans has come. When Fern's turn arrives she alone perceives the instability hidden in Serie's mana, and a delighted Serie immediately offers to take her as an apprentice, only for Fern to refuse.

She turns away Kanne, Laufen, Dunste, Ehre, Scharf, and Frieren. Fern alone perceives the instability within Serie's mana, prompting Serie to offer her an apprenticeship, which Fern declines.

Notes

Serie frames a core law of magic to the failing candidates: a mage can only realize what they are able to picture, and fear of her mana exposes a lack of self-belief. Lernen recalls that when Frieren registered he saw at a glance she was suppressing a reserve nearly matching Serie's own, a deception polished over centuries to slip past mana-sensitive demons; Serie notes that before him only the Demon King had ever pierced it at sight. She privately laments that Lernen never managed to perceive the instability in her own mana. A flashback explains why the flower-field spell means so much to Frieren: lost as a child, Himmel was shown that magic by an elf and grasped for the first time that it could be beautiful, the chance meeting that later drew Frieren into his party.
