Sohma Curse

The curse announces itself through sudden change. Anyone carrying a zodiac spirit reverts to their animal shape the instant a person of the other sex embraces them, and the same thing occurs under heavy strain such as illness, exhaustion, or panic. Each shift arrives wrapped in a puff of tinted vapor, a distinct shade for every holder, and the return to human form leaves the person bare. Curiously, an embrace from a fellow member of the bond triggers nothing at all.

Physical traits often bleed over from the beast. Hatsuharu wears the Ox in his split black and white hair, while Kisa's amber eyes and golden locks echo the Tiger. The Cat stands apart, saddled with a second grotesque body that reeks of decay; only a bracelet strung from bone and blood keeps Kyo, and every Cat before him, from collapsing into that hideous shape.

More than a physical quirk, the tie is an emotional tether only its bearers can feel. Every cursed Sohma weeps the first time they lay eyes on their god, and the blood in their veins will not let them openly resist that figure, even when they ache to. A few sharp words from Akito can wound them in body and spirit alike, which is why Hatori could never blame her for the injuries and erased memories that scarred his own past.

Isuzu likens the bond to a manacle: what may sound like a tender pledge feels, to those living it, like a shackle. A strong enough attachment can override it, as when Momiji placed himself between Akito and Tohru. The Cat suffers worst of all, cast as the outcast the others quietly measure themselves against, a scapegoat whose misery lets the rest tell themselves they at least have it better.

The tale reaches back centuries. A solitary being later called God found company when a stray cat chose to stay at his side, and delighted by the friendship he gathered the other beasts for nightly feasts. Dreading the day death would end their gatherings, he traced a ring inside a cup of water and had them all drink, a spell meant to reincarnate the group forever so their fellowship would never lapse. The Cat alone refused eternity, and his refusal was read as treachery, which is why every Cat since is punished and shut away.

Because the arrangement runs against nature, it eventually began to fray as the blood itself weakened. Telltale signs appeared: the Dragon's holder turned into a seahorse and the Rooster's into a sparrow rather than their true beasts. Kureno slipped free a decade before the story opens, with Momiji and Hiro following for reasons never fully explained. The rest were released almost together, mere seconds apart, once Tohru's deep attachments and Akito's own change of heart finally undid what the promise had become.
