Eat Somen with Your Friends

Season two continues with a Kyo-focused chapter framed around the career plans students must hand in before the summer holiday. The forms drag questions about the future into the open, and both Tohru and Kyo find little comfort in them. What surfaces is how much of each of their lives feels dictated by forces they cannot control.

Tohru writes that she hopes to find work after graduating, prompting Arisa to tease that marriage to Yuki or Kyo might suit her better. Tohru later accompanies Kyo to the dojo run by his teacher Kazuma, where the pair's ease around each other draws quiet notice. A darker thread emerges when Kyo's father arrives to ask Kazuma to confine his son to the cat's chamber after graduation, branding the boy a monster who killed his own mother. Kazuma refuses the framing, telling the man he has forfeited any right to claim Kyo. Back home, Kyo and Tohru prepare somen and talk over what lies ahead. She proposes he inherit the dojo, but he doubts he will be allowed any say, since Akito holds that decision. Tohru voices her own fear of standing on her own and the certainty that her time under Shigure's roof cannot last forever.

The title lifts a line spoken by Shigure. The episode weaves together the forty-sixth and fifty-second chapters, reshuffling their events much as the previous installment did, and marks the anime debut of Kunimitsu Tomoda. Several manga beats were pared down, including a longer walk to the dojo, extra dialogue about Kazuma's cooking, and a more drawn-out version of Kyo's doubts about his place among people. A montage showing Tohru at various ages as she imagines her future was created for the anime.
