Goodbye

The eleventh episode of the third season pairs Kyo's long-delayed confession with the release of the Sohma curse and the retelling of the zodiac's original tale. As Tohru leaves the hospital, the distance between her and Kyo collapses into honesty, while at the estate Akito makes a choice that frees everyone. Tohru's narration then reaches back to the first promise between a lonely god and a stray cat.

Discharged from the hospital and met by Arisa and Saki, Tohru bolts the instant she sees Kyo, unable to explain the impulse even to herself. Kyo chases her down and apologizes for running from her feelings and for calling her a disappointment, begging for the chance to keep moving forward at her side. He kisses her, then asks to hold her though he expects to transform, and to their shock the change never comes. At the Sohma estate Akito gazes outside and murmurs a farewell, having quietly dissolved the bonds that shaped every cursed member. Tohru then narrates the origin of the Chinese zodiac, the story of a solitary god befriended by a stray cat and the banquet of twelve animals that followed, of the enchanted cup that promised eternal reunion, and of the cat who refused it and asked only that the god one day walk among people in daylight. One by one across the episode the freed Sohma weep or reflect, from Ayame and Rin to Haru, Hatori, and Shigure, while Kyo snaps his prayer beads and shows Kazuma he no longer needs them.

The title is drawn from a line of Akito's. The episode adapts chapters one hundred twenty-nine through one hundred thirty-one, though the manga placed the origin tale after the curse fully broke rather than alongside it. Several beats were rearranged or added for the anime, including Tohru's hospital farewell shown from her viewpoint, birds taking flight during the kiss, and the reveal that Akito herself undid Kyo's transformation. The adaptation also skipped Yuki and Machi's parallel scene from the manga and staged Akito's final meeting with Tohru at the main house rather than at Kazuma's.
